Sometimes the fear is too great.
I spotted a very large black beetle. There is no common English name for the ground beetle, Carabus coriaceus, but some names refer to its leathery appearance. So maybe we could call it the leather ground beetle. 🙂

In any case, this is the largest ground beetle in Europe and can reach a total length of 40 mm, which is really quite powerful.
Also, a big predatory beetle needs big mandibles, on photo they look like bolt cutters!

I wanted to offer my cock to the monster.
I caught him and let him romp in a box. When he calmed down I was prepared, had found a quiet place. When I then presented him with the bare glans he started to run very fast again and his legs clattered loudly in the box.
That was too much for me. The beetle is huge and must be very strong. The fear was too great and I let the beetle run again. A pity.
Have you tried such a large beetle?

In Dutch it has a name that indeed translates to "Leather ground beetle".
It feeds mainly on slugs, snail and worms. It cannot fly. It's night active and hides at daytime. When threatened it try to run away and hide under stones, logs, etc. Though when provoked it can deliver a nasty bite. Or spits its stomach contents to the attacker.
So they prefer to run and hide from you, but if you persist in provoking them, they might deliver a painful bite or other nasty presents.
They (and related species) are useful in nature and agriculture, because they also predate on larvae of beetle species that are considered pests.

Still sounds great to me. I thought within middle Europe we don't have that many big critters.. But. I may have to learn .. and may have to do an-experiment ;-)
