I live in an apartment in downtown Houston, Texas. I am from Louisiana but my new job brought me here.
Anyway, sometimes in the evening I like to go down by the pool and just relax. It’s very peaceful down there at night because most people swim during the day. Plus I smoke, I know bad habit, and I don’t like to do that in my apartment.
There is a married couple that live next door. With it being an apartment I can hear through the walls when they have disagreements. This happens pretty regularly. I think she gets aggravated with him because probably 3-4 nights a week he is out with his friends at the bars drinking and leaves her home. I know that because I can hear them and I’ll often hear him coming home at all hours.
Recently, I was sitting outside and I heard their door open. He was leaving to go out again and she was NOT happy about it.
He stormed off and she went inside. It wasn’t long before she came back outside. She just stood upstairs leaning on the rail. I could see that she had a wine glass in her hand. After a bit she came down stairs and walked to the pool area where I was sitting. I typically carried a few beers down there with me and tonight was no exception. She walked up to me and started to apologize about the noise. I told her not to worry and that I understood that couples disagree sometimes. I saw her eyeing the cigarette in my hand and I offered her one. She said she was trying to quit but that, yes, she would love one.
She was obviously distraught as well as a little tipsy from the wine. I could see how red her eyes were as I lit her cigarette. I’m sure she had been crying. She leaned back in the deck chair next to mine and finished her glass of wine and enjoyed her smoke.
After a minute I could see that she was tearing up. I asked her what was wrong and she began to tell me about what was wrong with her marriage. She told me that they used to go everywhere together. But now he just wanted to be out in the bars by himself. She finished her wine as we were talking so I offered her a beer which she accepted. I tried to console her and I think that made her feel better. I told her that she was a beautiful woman, which she was. I told her that it was not unusual for her to want to feel appreciated and loved. She told me I was sweet and that she really enjoyed talking to me. I told her that I was going in and would she like for me to walk her home. She accepted.
I could tell the alcohol was having an effect because she sort of stumbled when she started up the stairs. I caught her before she fell. I put my left arm around her waist and she put her right arm around my neck as I walked her up the stairs.
When we got to her door she started tearing up again. She asked me if I was going to be up for a while. I told her I was just going to watch some TV. She said she just didn’t want to be in her apartment alone and could she join me? I told her that was fine and she asked if I liked wine? I told her I did and she excused herself to get a bottle and two glasses from her house.
We settled in on the couch and found something to watch. She told me that it was so nice to just have someone to talk to that seemed to enjoy her company.
She turned to me and asked me if I meant what I said about her being attractive? I told her, of course I did. You’re a beautiful woman and any man would be lucky to have you. She almost teared up again. Smiled and leaned in and kissed me full on in the mouth.
